Tips & Guidance

The application form plays an important part in your selection for a job at NYCC, it is the only basis for considering your initial suitability for the post. The decision whether or not to invite candidates for interview is based entirely on what is written on the application form.

It is essential that you give as much information as you can about yourself and relate it to the job requirements, do not assume that the employer knows anything about you. By the time you have completed your application form, you should have demonstrated:

  • That you meet the ‘essential’ criteria outlined in the Person Specification
  • That you've researched NYCC and that you know what the job entails
  • That you could fit in well in the team and organisation
  • That you've given your application careful consideration
  • Your enthusiasm for the job

The Application Pack

You will be sent the Job Description and Person Specification (these can also be found online) to help you with your application, in addition to the Application form.

Job Description

This essentially describes the tasks, responsibilities and relationships involved in the job. This information can be useful; if you have previous experience of these duties, or relevant transferable skills make sure you show this in your application.

Person Specification

This lists all the essential skills, experience and qualifications which are necessary for the job and the criteria against which you will be assessed. You should view both your application form and your interview as an opportunity to demonstrate that you meet all the essential criteria for the job.

Application Form

NYCC has a standard application form which is used for all vacancies, CVs will not be accepted.

The Stages of Application

Stage One: Short listing

Once all the applications have been received, recruiters will decide who they wish to invite to interview. They will check your application against the essential and desirable criteria detailed in the Person Specification. To be short listed, you must demonstrate that you meet all of the essential criteria; that you could do the job competently; and fit with the team and the organisation. You should:

  • Show how you meet the essential skills, qualifications or experience criteria outlined on the Person Specification.
  • Match your skills to the job description
  • Use your knowledge and research into NYCC to show that you would be a good ‘fit’
  • Make it easy for the selector to find the answers that they are looking for.

Stage Two: The Interview

Those assessing you at interview will have studied your application and they are may use it as a prompt when asking you questions. Make sure you keep a copy of your application form and look at it before your interview so that you know what to expect.
