Application Process
You have to make sure, as best you can, that your application matches with what the job and the organisation is looking for from you. Though it may seem time consuming, tailoring your application is one of the most important ways to produce a good application.
A Good Fit
It’s important to show you would fit well into the team and the organisation.
- Read the job advert, description and the person specification thoroughly and make sure you understand what they're looking for, try to read between the lines.
- List the specific skills and qualities that this job asks for - two year's experience, outgoing, computer literacy etc; demonstrate, through examples, that you have what is needed.
Tailor your application to the job
Unless you're applying for identical jobs, each application should be different, matching to the job it's intended for. It may be useful to construct a basic section as the raw material for all your applications. However, you will need to adapt it for each job that you apply for. You may want to customise it by: -
- Researching the job and NYCC to get a good grasp of what they're about. Use the information to make your application stronger.
- Adapting your basic application so that your skills, experience, strengths and qualities that fit the requirements of the job are demonstrated. It is very important that you demonstrate how you meet all the essential criteria of the job.
When selectors read your application they will look at how you come across, and what they can tell about your skills and experience from your application. When completing your application:
- Don’t copy or use phrases because they sound impressive; instead try to give a glimpse of your work personality e.g. what motivates you to achieve results
- Use words you're comfortable with avoiding slang, clichés and jargon.
- Show your enthusiasm
- Make sure that your application does you justice, but be honest and don’t exaggerate.
- Make sure all the things that are good about you and that make you suitable for the job are made clear and easy to follow.
