Work Placements

To improve competitiveness, it is vital for education and business to work together to ensure that young people are better prepared for the world of work, with the necessary skills and motivation.

One important way in which the Council can establish links with local schools is through the provision of work experience placements. Work experience offers many benefits and opportunities. For pupils, it can enhance their knowledge and understanding and better prepare them for the world of work. For the Council, it can provide the opportunity to help pupils develop an insight into the skills and attitudes required by business and raise their awareness of career opportunities within North Yorkshire County Council itself.

New Work Experience Program

This year sees the launch of our new work experience program with over 80 placements available throughout the county. The work experience program is now centrally coordinated by Kate Race the Young Persons Development Adviser and Kate says, “The Work experience is the most important factor in shaping young people’s perceptions of the world of work. Over 8,500 learners in York and North Yorkshire go on work experience every year. It helps them to learn about a particular occupation, gain valuable personal skills such as independence and team work, and to understand the expectations of employers”.

As an employer we have the opportunity to help shape the future workforce and give our employees the chance to develop supervisory skills. Getting involved in work experience shows that NYCC is committed to helping the community. Work Experience placements will benefit the Authority by:

  • encouraging young people to consider local government as a career option
  • giving NYCC the opportunity to market itself as a potential future employer
  • increasing young people’s awareness of the variety of opportunities available
  • helping to develop the skills of potential future employees
  • giving current employees the chance to develop supervisory skills
