Waste Management Team

Digger operating in a landfill

Waste Management Unit arranges the recycling and disposal of waste collected by district councils. The unit is also responsible for the network of 20 household waste recycling centres where residents of the County can take their bulky household waste for reuse, recycling, composting or safe disposal. The unit also makes sure that old landfill sites don't cause pollution to the environment. An important area of work is providing practical advice on how to reduce waste and how to recycle more and this is often through targeted communications campaigns. Research is also carried out to identify how and why waste composition is changing so that we can plan ahead for the future. The unit also develops waste strategy and policy for the county council, and works with the district councils to deliver services cost-effectively. To meet the challenges of waste and to deliver national targets, the unit is also working on delivering new ways of treating waste through the procurement of new sorting, bulking and treatment plant.
