Trading Standards and Regulatory Services

Trading Standards and Regulatory Service enforces legislation that controls goods and services that we all buy and sell on a daily basis, to achieve safe communities and a prosperous local and national economy. Officers are employed as Trading Standards Officers, Enforcement Officers and Operational Support Assistants to work towards this aim. The job of a trading standards professional is a very varied one, with the areas of work carried out covering a wide spectrum, including:

  • Animal health and welfare
  • Food, animal feeding stuffs and fertilisers
  • Community safety including the safety of sports grounds, and the storage of petroleum and explosives,
  • Consumer and community support and education
  • Fraud, special investigations and proceeds of crime investigations
  • The safety of consumer goods
  • The sale of alcohol, tobacco, fireworks and other age restricted products, to children
  • Weights and Measures.

The Service employs over 60 staff in total, of whom 14 are currently funded by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to provide some of our enforcement work in relation to Animal Health. Offices are based at one of the three trading standards locations – Scarborough, Harrogate and Northallerton and work in one of four sections: Business Compliance, Consumer Services, Enforcement, Licensing and Process and Fraud and Special Investigations.
