Senior Personnel Advisor
1) What is your current Job Role?
Senior HR Advisor.
2) When did you first take an interest in this area of work?
About five years ago, I started at NYCC with a clear idea of where I wanted to progress to.
3) What are your main responsibilities?
- Generalist personnel advice and guidance to a range of senior managers on Employee relations.
- Hands on advocacy.
4) What do you enjoy most about your job?
- 1. The range of work, it’s extremely various and never boring!
- 2. Gaining the trust and confidence of managers and seeing complex issues to a satisfactory conclusion.
5) What do you dislike most about your job?
On occasions it becomes very hectic with a number of high priorities and I have the odd tear-my-hair out day.
6) What attributes and/or skills do you need to do your job well?
- Influencing and advocacy skills
- Up to date and in depth knowledge of Employment Law/ legislation and various initiatives.
7) What experience, qualifications or training do you need to do your job?
Post Graduate diploma in Personnel Management.
8) What is your typical day?
- Half the day is spent giving advice and guidance on the telephone, researching areas in order to give appropriate advice.
- Quarter to a half of the day is on school visits.
- The rest of the day is spent writing letters, dealing with priority issues and liaising with other agencies, colleagues and departments.
9) What is the work environment like?
Busy and a bit cramped but never dull.
10) What are the benefits of doing the job you do?
I have a great deal of autonomy and I feel that I am making a significant contribution and managers are usually very grateful for the support.
11) Do you work on your own or as part of a team?
Part of a team.
12) What would be the typical next move from your position? Is this your planned next move?
The typical next move would be a Personnel Manager or a more senior strategic HR role.
13) What’s your ultimate goal and career aspiration?
My goal is to be a Personnel Manager managing an operational team of staff.
14) Have you got any advice for those who want to follow a career like yours?
- Work hard and aim high.
- Always prepare for the next step by knowing what the person spec is and do your utmost to develop skills in those areas.
- Speak to managers and let them know where you are aiming.
