Day in the life of . .

Cooks

8.00 am

  • I arrive at work and get changed into my working cloths a clean apron and cap. Wash my hands – the first of many throughout the day. I check the menus for the day, (residents will have been given choices from yesterday). Prepare; porridge and toast for breakfast. Make sure fruit juices, cereals and milk are ready. Check fridge temperature.

8.30 am

  • Serve breakfast, this can last up to an hour or so, in between I usually have time to prepare vegetables for today’s lunch.

9.30 am

  • Start preparing the meat for today and the desert.

10.00 am

  • Staff break, prepare toast, tea and coffee for staff. Sit down and have my breakfast and rest my legs for 15 minutes

10.15 am

  • Back in the kitchen, prepare trolley for residents mid morning drink, check biscuit tin is full.

10.30 am

  • Start the baking for the day. In between time put vegetables on to cook, check meat or fish course.

11.30 am

  • Do any ordering needed for tomorrow, fruit & veg, butchery.

12.00 noon

  • Serve lunch. Help with washing up afterwards.

1.00 pm

  • My lunch hour (a welcome break)

2.00 pm

  • Back to the kitchen, start preparations for tea. Usually a choice of cooked meal , home made soup, sandwiches and home made cakes or fresh fruit.

2.30 pm

  • Prepare trolley for afternoon tea.

3.00 pm

  • Clean down cookers and prep areas, complete some weekly cleaning jobs.

4.00 pm

  • Residents tea time, serve meals and wash up. Check kitchen is clean and tidy, check fridges to make sure everything is covered and dated.

5.00 pm

  • Go home and prepare to start all over again tomorrow (Phew)
