1) What is your current Job Role?
Trainee Accounting Technician
2) When did you first take an interest in this area of work?
I worked in Finance in an admin role for two years. My line manager suggested that I apply t o be a Trainee Accounting Technician at appraisal, I then looked into the job and found it to be something I could do.
3) What are your main responsibilities?
I move around between different departments annually but my current responsibilities are budget monitoring, financial forecasting, and offering advice and assistance to budget holders.
4) What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy helping managers understand finance. I feel a sense of achievement when I’ve produced something anyone, not just finance staff, can understand.
5) What do you dislike most about your job?
Filing, there can be a lot of it!
6) What attributes and/or skills do you need to do your job well?
You need to be organised, like numbers, you need to be able to use a computer particularly Excel, able to talk to people and not to be afraid to ask for help.
7) What experience, qualifications or training do you need to do your job?
5 GCSEs at A-C, admin experience, local government knowledge
8) What is your typical day?
Filing, updating budgets, dealing with queries are all things that are generally done everyday but each day is different. Depending on the time of the month you can have meetings with budget holders, payroll adjustments, grant claim forms and admin tasks.
9) What is the work environment like?
It’s good, you are give responsibility but help is there when you need it, you are supported in your studies and everyone is friendly.
10) What are the benefits of doing the job you do?
With my job my qualification is paid for, I get day release to go to college and it is a stepping stone to greater things. You get to experience many different aspects of finance and work with a lot of different people. You are always learning something new.
11) Do you work on your own or as part of a team?
You work as part of a team, usually a small team within a larger section.
12) What would be the typical next move from your position? Is this your planned next move?
My next move is to pass my exams and go on to do CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy)
13) What’s your ultimate goal and career aspiration?
Director of Financial Services
14) Have you got any advice for those who want to follow a career like yours?
Don’t be afraid to try! If you put the work in you can do anything!
